This is how I hold the bat for low lift long flicksand in defence. Note the
bat is close
to the bottom near the hand, and the thumb in a position to slip off and save
injury.

For chip flicks rotate the bat so the thumb is lower, the puck always starts
close to
the hand

With this grip you can acheive10 to 15 footers (3 to 4.5m). I am now adopting
this as I get more used to the technique. Note in all my wrist is cocked back
to give
the maximum distance.

Don't forget the sweep flick, there is still the angled face to tip the puck
and allow
water underneath for lift. The top can also be used.
